DNCC: Bill Clinton

Rep. Kendrick Meek is introducing Bill Clinton. There is an AP headline stating "Bill Clinton giving Obama forceful backing."

Update [2008-8-27 21:4:9 by Todd Beeton]:CSPAN keeps cutting to Hillary and Chelsea smiling wide, waving flags.

Update [2008-8-27 21:6:48 by Todd Beeton]:"I am here first to support Barack Obama. Second I am here to warm up the crowd for Joe Biden." The tent is laughing and applauding.

"That makes 2 of us. Actually, that makes 18 million of us." Nice line.

"Barack Obama is the man for this job." Got that traditional media? "In his first presidential decision, the selection of a running mate, he hit it out of the park."

"In Barack Obama, America will have the national security leadership we need. My fellow Democrats, I say to you Barack Obama is ready to lead America..." The message of the night: Barack Obama is ready.

"...to protect, defend the constitution..." That got a huge reaction here at the tent.

"Barack Obama is ready to be President of the United States."

"The world has always been more impressed by the power of our example than the example of our power." Hell yes.

Good, time to go after Republicans. "Now what have the Republicans gotten us?...The biggest income inequality since the 1920s."

"My fellow Democrats, America can do better than that. And Barack Obama will do better than that."

"Yes he can but first we have to elect him."

Oh lord, more praise of John McCain. "But on the two most important questions of this election, how to build the American dream and how to restore America's standing in the world, John McCain was wrong."

"John McCain is promising more of the same."

"Let's send a simple message to John McCain: thanks but no thanks. In this case, the third time is not the charm."

"Barack Obama will return America from fear and division to hope and unity. And if you still believe in a place called hope, then join Hillary, Chelsea and me in making Barack Obama the next president of the United States."

The bloggers are loving Bill.

Michelle Obama needs to smile more (2.00 / 2)

OK, I am not a Clintonite and am pro Obama. But damn, even I was caught up in the moment of the big ovation for Clinton at the beginning. Michelle has had expressions ranging from sourpuss to a repressed smile for most of the first half of the speech. What the hell is bothering her to be so serious looking? She will only feed into the PUMA pyschotic hatred.

OK update. She is finally smiling a lot more freely when Clinton keeps mentioning Obama.

Re: Michelle Obama needs to smile more (2.00 / 2)

I noticed the same thing during Hillary's speech last night. She didn't smile or clap until she started talking about Obama. Maybe the pool cameras are intentionally trying to make her look like a sourpuss, but she's certainly not helping the situation. She should have a smile permamently affixed to her face just in case the cameras point at her. And the beauty of it is once the bridge is built it's open, rolling country on the other side.  I certainly hope we are changing politics for awhile to come, it seems that way.  I must say Bill has no lack of 'vision' and it's nice to be reminded of why he was elected twice, had such a successful administration and such a profound positive impact on the party.  We are truly all in this together and it was his presidency that erected the nearside piers of your metaphorical bridge, it's now up to us to span it.

Just an aside, I'd love to see Obama join Bill in Hope, Arkansas sometime during this campaign, that would be great theatre.

by Obama44 on Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 09:35:14 PM EST

Re: DNCC: Bill Clinton (none / 0)

the only problem with your comment is that the "rising tides" comment is a Republican economic view (from Keynesian economics)--that when the economy does well, everyone in America does well.  Not so! As we've seen for the last 8 years.

Re: DNCC: Bill Clinton (2.00 / 1)

I believe "a rising tide lifts all boats" is a JFK quote, and it is not inconsistent with the kind of broad based tax cuts Obama has proposed. Trickle down is the Republican conception, a la Bush's sunsetting tax cuts for the rich.

Re: DNCC: Bill Clinton (none / 0)

JFK used it, but it is straight from Keynesian economics (there's actually a long story about JFK being convinced by the Keynesian view, but I don't remember it).  The phrase is used to justify the trickle down (supply-side) economic view.  I can't see how it would have anything to do with supporting tax cuts for the lower and/or middle classes.

Keynesian economics is Democratic economics (none / 0)

Paul Krugman is a huge proponent of Keynesian economics, Robert Reich's arguments for deficit spending are all from Keynes, Keynes was John Kenneth Galbraith's hero. Keynesian economics is part of the foundation of FDR's policies and the New Deal. You can't get more Democratic than that, it's an anathema to Republicans.

Re: Keynesian economics is Democratic economics (none / 0)

Actually, you're part right, and I'm part right.  I think you're right that Reich is Keynesian, but Krugman is actually neo-Keynesian and rejects the traditional monetarist view of Keynes.  In fact, FDR rejected Keynes' suggestions for pulling us out of the Great Depression (but of course, WWII sort of forced us into massive government spending, and that pulled us out of the GD, but it wasn't exactly what Keynes had in mind).

All that aside, Krugman rejects the "rising tide lifts all boats" claim, because it suggests that when the economy is good, everyone benefits equally.  No democrat believes this; much of the criticism that Krugman levies against Bush is centered on the inequality that has been generated over the last 8 years, despite a number of "good" economic indicators.
