DNCC: Joe Biden

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden is introducing his Dad. This is actually a really moving speech in and of itself.

"I have something to ask of you: be there for both of them!"

"Please help me in welcoming my friend, my father, my hero, the next Vice President of the United States of America."

Update [2008-8-27 22:46:27 by Todd Beeton]:"I am proud to live in a country with the bravest soldiers in the world."

"Yes, yes I accept your nomination to run and serve with Barack Obama as the next Vice President of America."

This speech is really moving.

This place is dead silent.

This place is going nuts at the "George...I mean, John McCain..." line.

"John McCain is my friend...but I profoundly disagree with the direction John McCain wants to take this country."

Biden's repeated refrain: "That's not change, that's more of the same." It's a little awkward but true.

"These times require more than a good soldier, they require a wise leader." I really like this line.

(I'm running out of battery, so continue to discuss in the comments.)

Once again, my PA bias is showing.

Having a veep born in Scranton is fucking bananas.

Re: DNCC: Joe Biden (none / 0)

Joe's mom is great.

In the Biden family, children were taught to respect the habit, but not necessarily the person in it. As a boy, Biden took endless ribbing from classmates for a stutter he later overcame. Much of the time, the nuns tried to help. But when a seventh-grade teacher mimicked Bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-Biden's stutter in front of the class, his mother, Jean, demanded a meeting with the principal and the offending nun. "If you ever speak to my son like that again, I'll come back and rip that bonnet off your head," she said. Later, when then-Senator Biden told her he was going to visit the pope, she said: "Don't you kiss his ring."

Re: DNCC: Joe Biden (none / 0)

I think he read one of my old posts.

First, Biden and speakers tomorrow must pound home the message: John McCain's experience is being wrong. For all of his experience, McCain has made the wrong decision continually. Continually wrong on Iraq. Continually wrong on the economy. Continually wrong on all of the issues that Americans care about. On the flip side, Obama, especially on concern issues like the "war on terror" (with tomorrow being national security night), has been continually correct. He said Iraq was a mistake and would distract us. He was right. He said that we needed more troops in Afghanistan and, hey, what do you know, the Pentagon says more troops are needed (but unlikely since they're in Iraq). He said that we need timetables on when our combat troops step aside for the Iraqis. Now even the Bush administration has started talking about that. John McCain is currently to the right of the Bush Administration on this issue and that cannot go un-noted. All the experience in the world is not helping McCain with fundamental judgment.

OK, maybe not, but I had a sense of deja vu.

He attracts a different type of crowd. It was a very nice speech, though when you have to follow Hillary the night before and Bill the same night, it's almost impossible to live up to that bar.

The only thing he should beware is his style does not lend itself to repeated slogans. He's brash, emotional and straight forward. The pauses for the crowd were kind of awkward.

Anytime you see tons of people crying.... (1.00 / 2)

it's not a good sign. Beau Biden's speech was too personal, and in poor taste. You want upbeat at these things; you don't want people in tears.

Who needs "Days of our Lives" when you've got the Biden family history??? Car accidents, stuttering, hardship...many of us get depressed enough without listening to these horrible stories.

All of his great story is true. I used to see Senator Biden on the Metroliner between DC and New York during the '80's; sometimes one of his kids was with him. He is a great family man.

But voters get cynical when politicians use family tragedy to excess in selling themselves. The GOP often calls us the party of "gloom and doom"...people like Biden give them plenty of ammunition.

This was an upbeat evening at the convention until Biden took the stage.....now it's just downbeat and depressing.

Re: Winning friends and influencing people (2.00 / 2)

The reason we lose over and over again is because we often don't sell the person. Kerry didn't have a personal story to tell. Neither did Gore really. Who was the last Presidential candidate who really did for us? Oh yeah... might've been a guy named Bill Clinton.

The fact that both the Biden's and Obama have personal and meaningful life stories is a good thing for us and a good thing for them. In that vein Beau did a great job of introducing the country to the VP they should get to know and love.

Sorry you didn't like it. Sorry you want to hear about nothing but policy. Sorry you like throwing tracking polls in peoples faces. Sorry you felt it was reasonable to mock the Biden story as a soap opera (speaking of in poor taste.)

Kerry's story WAS personal, that's the whole point. He turned the 2004 convention into a four day infomercial about his experience in Vietnam, which was promptly the target of the swift-boaters, led by Dr. Corsi.

Candidates--especially Obama and Biden--need to learn the cardinal rule of politics: voters don't want to hear about YOUR past. They more interested in THEIR future.

So: let's talk about drill/drill/drill; people are sick of $4 gas. Let's talk about free trade and growing the economy. Let's talk about jobs.

I am feeling good.  They have structured this convention very nicely to build up to tomorrow night.

And how great is going to be to have Al Gore introduce Obama tomorrow night.  Gore will undoubtedly skewer McCain but his presence will also remind everyone of how different the last 8 years could have been and with the country's buyers remorse this has to be helpful for Obama.

I think he said lot of right things (2.00 / 1)

While he may not have been the most effective speaker of the night, he clearly tried to connect hard-working Americans.

And several things he said hit the right note. I like the passage when he talked about taking the train to wilmington every day from work and the stories that he heard from hard-working Americans.

It began with Clinton yesterday, but after Bill and Joe today, they made one thing very-2 clear. And that is ``change'' is not an abstract quantity; but something that affects everybody's life.
The choice before people is not to choose between a ``celebrity'' and a ``POW'' but between their own secure future and irreparable damage to several future directions. Finally, I think the Dem convention has found its real voice.

Re: DNCC: Joe Biden (2.00 / 2)

Joe Biden questioned John McCain's judgment.  This is LONG........... over due.  McCain has Been WRONG on Foreign policy.  You can not trust the party that allowed 3,000 people to die on 9-11 to 4 more years.  Blunt stuff.  Wrong on Iraq.

Why the hell is David Gregory interviewing David Letterman?

Oops, that's Tom Daschle.

Nice specks.

Re: DNCC: Joe Biden (2.00 / 1)

Biden's speech is getting a bit of flak for delivery on CNN but they miss the whole point, it was pitch-perfect in portraying Biden as an 'everyman' candidate who speaks of the issues of genuine concern to middle-class voters in simple terms.  He is convincingly 'authentic and honest' and that is exactly the 'ham and cheese' that Biden brings to our emerging victory.  It is vital, sincere and a convincing affirmation of Obama's choice of him as VP.  I reckon his little grandson, who was firmly clasping his neck as he was carried through Biden's post speech walk-about, was as formidable an advocate of Democratic values as any orator tonight.

Incidentally, did you see Obama's call-outs to Hillary and Bill?  The Clintons seemed genuinely pleased, and rightly so.

Re: DNCC: Joe Biden (none / 0)

I watched CSPAN tonight for just that reason ... I'm watching MSNBC now, but I missed the Schweitzer speech last night because they didn't show it...

The shout-outs were good TV, and I'm hoping the media just STFU on the "feud"

Chuck Todd, whom I normally like is calling Biden's speech disjointed.

hey i love Chuck Todd, doesn't mean I will agree with him 100% of the time.

he is best when he is talking numbers, he needs to keep with that

Re: DNCC: Joe Biden (none / 0)

Yeah, I can see that he might from an oratorical perspective, but that misses the point.  As for defining Biden, who hasn't really had that much national exposure, as a 'kitchen-table' Democrat it was perfect.  And we need that.

And Biden's fearless derision of McCain's foreign policy was refreshingly prominent as well, another important message.  I liked the line We don't need a good soldier, we need a good leader best myself.  Let's hope that becomes a credo of the campaign, reinforced endlessly.

Re: DNCC: Joe Biden (none / 0)

Todd went on to talk about how Biden was using a new speechwriter, and that he wasn't completely comfortable with the text etc, etc ... that makes sense, but I think there was alot more good in his speech than not.

Maybe I'm biased (yay Scranton!) but I think that was a little much from Todd.

Re: DNCC: Joe Biden (2.00 / 1)

I like Chuck Todd, but I think he just missed the whole point here.  It was better that Biden was a bit halting, made a few grammatical mistakes and dropped a few tempos.  It makes him seem more normal and accessible and effectively undercuts the whole 'Obama as celebrity' narrative.

And as for content, Biden packed more credible criticism of McCain's foreign policy experience into one 'lunch-pail' speech than all the other candidates combined have accomplished collectively in over a year.

Re: DNCC: Joe Biden (none / 0)

Well said.

I like Todd alot, I think his understanding of the numbers and ground game are second to none, and when he's on Olbermann it's a highlight.

I think that Joe gave us alot of great sound bites, and made it very clear who he and Obama are, and who McCain is.

Re: DNCC: Joe Biden (none / 0)

I think it's pretty clear Biden delivered exactly what he could to best help our chances, and it was pretty significant.  If it comes in an unremarkable package in many ways all the better.

And his demolition of McCain's foreign policy somehow sneaked through the 'kid from Scranton' rhetoric without causing a ripple, to hopefully be served up at kitchen-tables and water-coolers all across middle-America.

The night was very well done (none / 0)

From Bill Clinton to Obama's surprise appearance, the Democrats really did well tonight. Biden's speech was a very good VP speech. He was passionate and talked about meat and potatoes.

Re: DNCC: Joe Biden (none / 0)

I didn't see Biden's speech so I can't critique it. But to those who think it wasn't great, I'd say getting sandwiched between Clinton and Obama must be every speaker's nightmare.

And besides, Obama's speech is the one that needs to be, and will be, GOOOOOOOOREAT!
